As we all know Twitter is a fantastic for social networking but it can be a little hard to manage once you have a few followers. The basic interface is not overly helpful but there is plenty of free help out there, here are the 5 applications that I find easiest to instal and use and that gives the best overall experience:

Tweet Deck – This is my current favourite desktop client for Twitter. It can be fairly memory hungry but it allows you to sort the people that you follow into groups. This enables you to easily categorise people into topics i.e. business, personal, IT or whatever designation you want and then you get the filtered results and are less likely to miss an important Tweet. It also allows you to update your Facebook status, create shortened urls, share photos, share videos, carry out searches and lots more!

Twirl – This was the desktop client that I used to use, it actually allows you to update/post to more social networking sites than Tweet Deck does, it has many of the same functions with regards to url shortening, video and picture posting. It can be just as memory hungry as Tweet Deck. The only true difference is the look and feel of the application. I find Tweet Deck to be much slicker.

Power Twitter – I have this installed as an addon for my Flock/Mozilla Firefox Browser, it extends the Twitter functionality without being a desktop client so it is not memory hungry. It delivers exactly what it claims you can search, post status updates to Facebook, it expands the urls that you see on Tweets (very useful for actually seeing where someone is leading you to), gives you inline YouTube, Flickr, TwitPic, Google Maps, song.ly. Very cool I use it a lot more than Tweet Deck at the moment.

TwitterBerry – Access for your Twitter account when you are on the move with your BlackBerry!

Twitterlator – Another devine application for the stunning piece of kit that is the iPhone. You can extend the functionality to a pro application but that isn’t really necessary unless you are a Twitter power user.

We are going to give it a trial run this Saturday let’s hope that we don’t have scorching hot sunshine like we did last Saturday or we may get burned to a crisp! It’s a really great cause so if you know anyone that is taking part please sponsor them or take part yourself you can find more information here.

I’ll let you know how the first effort pans out!

It’s funny how you think that things have changed and then it dawns on you that they haven’t at all. A great example of this is my use of the English Language.

I grew up in London, UK in the 1970s. My parents were middle class liberals so language wise I was always allowed to express my views in a colourful manner. They drew a line at the use of imported slang or cultural expletives. Don’t get me wrong there are words that I do not like or use and most of my explitives begin with the letter “B”.

Throughout my life swearing in context has always been a part of the way that I express myself. So common place is it that my mother in law who abhors swearing turned to me one day and said “You are the only person that I know, that when they say that word it doesn’t sound vulgar at all”. This comment was made to me in my mid-twenties by which time both my parents had passed away and I am sure my language, as a result of this, had taken in some of the newer imports.

Then my children came along and I saw no reason to modify my language. I have always brought my children up to express themselves freely. Imagine my surprise now that my children are teenagers and I find myself censored yet again. I am banned from using certain language and as before it’s not the traditional English expletives that have gone by the wayside. This time though the ban is because I am too old to use such terms and it causes them severe embarrassment.

Some words that currently reside on this list are (yes there is a list), ghetto fabulous, chillax, brapp, groovy, stylee, blood, shucks, rad, rahh, and there is even some debate currently the word “trippin” although my daughter is at a loss to provide an alternative for this one! Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!
